Breast augmentation is clearly being around for about 35 to 40 years. It is the enlargement of the women’s breast to enhance their size and volume. They can be used for many different types of conditions, in some cases sagging breasts, some cases uneven breasts, and in most cases just small breasts. I think any woman that is interested in enhancing the size and the shape of their breast is a candidate for breast augmentation surgery. During the consultation of breast augmentation surgery, we go over the different options in terms of the incisions, the place, and the implants, and those incisions can be through the armpit, underneath the breast, or around the areola. We also decide whether or not the women wishes to have the implants under the muscle or above the muscle or whether she wishes to utilize silicone implants or saline implants. As with any procedure and any type of surgery that we do, patient's pain thresholds or recuperation can vary greatly, but in general with our regimen of certain muscle relaxants and certain pain medications, the patient's postoperative recuperation is usually very quick with minimal discomfort. After the breast augmentation surgery is over, the patient is allowed to go home. It is the same day surgical procedure. I honestly believe that this type of surgery should be done in the hospital environment because the importance of sterility and the importance of the backup staff are necessary for general anesthesia as opposed to doing in an office environment. After the surgery is over, the patient returns to my office in about a week, at which time she is placed in a bra and she is allowed to go about her activities, although they are restricted. Following breast augmentation surgery, the patient should not do any types of physical activity with regard to exercise or karate or kickboxing or things like this for at least three weeks; however, the patients most often return to work in about a week to 10 days after this type of surgery.
